Wales Rugby League is preparing itself for a new dawn!

On Wednesday 26 April 2006 a new chapter in the coloured history of Rugby League in Wales will begin.

With autonomous status approved by the RFL on January 1 2006, and with our National Governing Body of Sport soon to be confirmed by the Sports council for Wales, this truly is a new beginning the game in Wales.

Fronted by ex Wales International Mark Rowley, the new Management Board have great ambitions for the sustainable development of Rugby League in Wales.

Mark Commented “This is an exciting time for Rugby League in Wales, with the formation of three new teams in 2006 for the Welsh Conference, and with the Celtic Crusaders doing so well, the future is looking bright!”

The additional teams now brings the total in the Welsh Conference to ten teams, spread throughout South Wales, split into two leagues, the East Conference and the West Conference.

With new inquiries coming in about the formation of new clubs throughout Wales happening frequently, then this figure can only grow over the coming years.

At the prestigious launch on Wednesday such dignitaries as Simon Weston, Dai Watkins, Clive Griffiths and Phil Carling have already confirmed their availability, and celebrities such as Stuart Cable are also lending their support to the cause.

Also attending are current Welsh internationals Lee Briers and Iestyn Harris, who will be joined by ex-players Kevin Ellis, Mike Nicholas and current Welsh coach Martin Hall.

The event, staged at newly opened Que Pasa’s in Cardiff’s City Centre will be supported by Wales Rugby League’s

sponsors, Tidy Magazine, Errea Sportswear, Costley and Partners Solicitors and Picton Jones Financial Advisors.

Picton Jones and Costley and Partners are our new League sponsors, and thanks to a SportsMatch grant, awarded by the Sports Council Wales, their generous support has been nearly doubled!

So this season our league will be known as “The Picton Jones and Costley and Partners Premier Welsh Conference”

All funds from the SportsMatch grant will be put back grassroots development, and their support is greatly appreciated.

Mark Rowley said of the sponsors: “Without the support from such companies, Wales Rugby League would not be able to survive on its own, and for that we are hugely grateful to them.
Such incentives as SpotsMatch help in attracting these sponsors, and give us the opportunity to plough even more money into grassroots development.”

In the last three months, Wales Rugby League has undergone several key changes.

A new kit has been designed and supplied by Errea, along with a new logo and brand name, Cymru RL.

A new website is currently being developed with updated features including a monthly newsletter, fans forum and information on all clubs.

Our latest constitution has been completed and formally passed to the Sports council for Wales for approval, ending our one year probation as a National governing Body of Sport.

So with a clear view to the future, Rugby League in Wales is certainly on the rise!

With the continued support from all who have got us to this position, and with the support from new partners, Wales Rugby League can only succeed in its mission to build a sustainable structure within Wales.

Please note that all Welsh and Sporting Media are welcome to cover the event.
