Round 3 Conference Preview

Sharks v Blue Bulls photo by Ian Lovell

Sharks eager to Welcome the Blue Bulls

History will be made on Saturday as the newly formed West Wales Sharks Rugby League Club play their first ever home game at the New Dock Stars ground in Llanelli against the Bridgend Blue Bulls.

Sharks spokesman Paul Prendiville said “the whole of the town are really looking forward to it and we can’t wait to welcome the Blue Bulls. We have a good young squad of around 24 with an average age of 22, most are still learning the game but all are really excited”.

The Sharks will be lead by skipper Gareth Murphy while others to watch will be. Mark Cook, Christian Jones, Daniel Griffiths and Jonathon Griffiths.

Meanwhile the Blue Bulls have a welcome problem ahead of clash after a number of players shone in last weeks win over Swansea.

Bulls Team Manager Simon Green said “the likes of Aaron Warner, Marc Bennet and Simon Mustoe made their debuts last week and were excellent, and with players like Matthew Hutchings, Ryan Morgan and Matthew Wareham set to return on Saturday selecting a team is going to be difficult. Buts it’s a good position to be in, especially after we struggled to put a team together in our opening match.

On Wednesday the Swansea Valley Miners host Aberavon Fighting Irish at Ystalyfera, the Miners will want to bounce back after their 48-22 defeat to Bridgend last week and will be boosted by the return of Dai Hawkins, while the Fighting Irish will hope to extend their lead at the top of the West Wales Conference table.

Valley Cougars travel to Newport Titans at Pill Harriers in the Welsh Conference Premier East on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm) looking to bounce back from

their 54-4 defeat at the hands of local rivals Cardiff Demons last week.

The Titans edged past new boys Blackwood Bulldogs last week and will be favourites for their second win in a row after CRL chairman and Cougars coach Mark Rowley admitted that they have injury problems going into the match.

Rowley said: “We have quite a few players unavailable this week in addition to our injury problems. We lost four people in last week’s match including one with a broken arm and two with broken hands so it will be a struggle. However I’m sure the people we’ve got coming in will be good enough to be up to the task.”

Blackwood host their first proper home match of the season on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm) as their entertain Pontypool’s Torfaen Tigers in a big clash of the Gwent valleys.

The Bulldogs will be looking to build on their successful staging of the Third Annual Scott McRorie Nines two weeks ago and attract another large crowd to Glan-yr-Afon Park.

They narrowly lost in their first league match of the season last week at Newport Titans but assistant coach Roger Moore was still happy with his team’s performance and is hopeful for Saturday.

Moore said: “Last week, we were pleased with the way things went and it was just inexperience that cost us the victory after being in the lead for so long in the game. The good thing was that everyone enjoyed it from players to supporters as the match was a classic. We hope to produce more of the same this week.

“We know that this week’s match will be difficult again as Torfaen are a very experienced side that have been going for a good few years now. I take my hat off to teams like Torfaen who have set up a successful side and kept it running. I now know from experience how hard it is to set up a club and keep it ticking over so I have the utmost respect for those who set up the league and have kept it going.”

Saturday’s match is Torfaen’s first of the season after torrential rain called off their home opener against Valley Cougars three weeks ago.
