The Welsh Rugby League are confident that both Iestyn Harris and Keiron Cunningham will play for Wales against Scotland in the Rugby League World Cup qualifying match at the Brewery Field on Sunday 29th October. Wales, semi-finalists in the last two World Cup tournaments, are aiming to be one of just five qualifiers from around the world that will join Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, England and France in the finals in Australia in 2008.
Cunningham, who along with Harris, has retired from the Great Britain side, declared his intentions to play for Wales in the World Cup in an exclusive interview in last week’s Wales on Sunday newspaper while the Welsh Rugby League are still talking to Harris.
Speaking to Peter Shuttleworth in the Wales on Sunday newspaper on September 10th, Cunningham said: “I

won't be giving up on Wales as there are less tours and games are less frequent. More to the point, the thought of playing in another World Cup excites me. World rugby's best players will be on show and Wales have a proud tradition to keep up.
“Back-to-back World Cup semi-finals is no mean feat for any nation. Last time we played outstandingly well and gave the Australians the fright of their lives with just a handful of stars and a bunch of rookies
“We need all experienced hands on deck if we're to make an impact.”
Harris had originally booked a holiday before the World Cup dates were announced with the dates clashing but Mark Rowley (pictured left) is now hopeful that his arrangements can be changed.
Rowley said: “We are in discussions with Iestyn now and we are trying to help him change his holiday plans as he wants to play for us. He and Keiron have both been picked for our first training squad and we’ll take things from there. I am confident that both players will be wearing a Welsh shirt come October 29th.”
The Welsh Rugby League are now selling corporate sponsorship for this crucial first World Cup qualifying match. All the details can be found here.
