UWIC stay top after early burst
UWIC 22 Bristol 8

Elsewhere in the Premier League West and Wales, leaders UWIC maintained their unbeaten start to the season despite a curate’s egg performance against the University of Bristol. For the first fifteen minutes, UWIC played like their championship team of five years ago and roared into a 16 – 0 lead. Centre Stu McReynolds scored the first try after just five minutes followed soon after by full back James Thatcher in his debut season linking up to cross wide out. Within moments Mc ‘’the knife’’ Reynolds sliced through for his second try and by converting two out of three took UWIC into an impressive lead.

As UWIC sat back, Bristol, to their credit, shook off their lethargy and decided they could also play on the west bank of the River Severn. Two tries to the visitors cut the deficit in half at 16 – 8 and but for missed

conversions the game would have been extremely close at the interval.

Unlike the first half, UWIC began the second 40 minutes extremely poorly but credit should be given to their scramble defence which kept Bristol at bay. Eventually the go forward play of UWIC prop and man of the match Ryan Steele swung the game back to the Welshmen and only resolute Bristol defence denied the home team from sealing the victory. Finally and deservedly, Stu McReynolds got his try hat trick and converted his own score to finish the game 22 – 8.

UWIC and Welsh Students Coach Anthony Loxton was left to reflect on UWIC’s weakest showing so far knowing that a better performance will be required next week in the top of the table clash away at Exeter.
