UWIC retain 100% record with tight win at Exeter
Exeter 12 UWIC RL 16

It was the clash of the titans at Duckes Meadow for what was billed as the biggest game of the season for EURL so far, who took on the league leaders UWIC.

Both teams started strong and it was fast and furious right from the word go. It was EURL however who made the first break through. A superb individual try from Captain Matt Wesley gave EURL a 4-0 lead shortly after 10 minutes. The try was then converted by James Hunt to extend the lead to 6-0.

From then on in the first half EURL were very much under pressure from the skilful and hard hitting UWIC side. Exeter felt the pain early on as they lost two of their players due to injury. First club captain Charlie Robin had to be substituted due to an injury concerning his mouth. He then later had to go for hospital treatment where he required stitches for his tongue. James Grout was the next Exeter player to suffer and unfortunate injury, a blow to the head meant that he had to sit out the rest of the game.

However EURL continued to hang on and just before half time Matt Wesley broke through the line to score another excellent try under the posts and one really to be proud of. James Hunt then converted the

try to give Exeter a 12-0 lead going into the break.

By now however, UWIC had shaken the bus journey out of their legs and in a reversal of fortunes dominated the second forty minutes. Steered around the pitch by hooker Lee Drabble, UWIC applied great pressure with excellent completions and the in-goal kicking of half back Alex Ballard gained repeated back-to-back sets. Despite their best efforts, Exeter could not resist and second row Dewi Scourfield scored the first UWIC try which Ballard goaled reducing the deficit to 6 – 12.

With their stars in the ascendancy, UWIC stuck to their game plan and applied even more pressure on the valiant Exeter defence. A cross field kick was taken by UWIC winger Max Kelly and the conversion by Ballard levelled the game at 12 points each. With ten minutes left, UWIC centre Stu ‘the Knife’ McReynolds made the gamebreaker play with a terrific cut out pass for winger Kelly to score his second and win the match for the Welshmen.

UWIC returned home vindicated by their decision to rotate four prop forwards with Pat Howell outstanding.
