Rhinos 74 Swansea Bulls 16

Rumney’s introduction to Rugby League looked like being a disaster when they conceded 2 tries in the first five minutes scored by Lewis Francis and Simon Slinn. Neither was converted by the visitors.

Rumney gradually got to grips with the speed of the game and confidence grew when tries started coming at the other end thanks to strong running by experienced players like Ian McIntyre who burst through the line of defence and made it all the way to the line.

Half time score was 24 to 12 in favour of Rumney with the third Swansea try being scored by Pat McCernon.

With the wind behind them in the second half there was no stopping the now rampant Rumney and tries came thick and fast as Swansea’s defence crumpled.

The final score was 72 to 16 with the last try for the visitors being scored by

determined loose forward Steve Evans following a period of sustained pressure by Swansea and some strong defence by the hosts.

Other Rumney scorers were Paul Curtin (1 try), Phil Carlton (1 + 6 conversions), Stuart McIntyre (2 +2), Anthony Jones (1), Wayne Yellen (3), David May (1), Ben Morris (1), Dan Clements (1) and Liam Maqueline (1). Stuart McIntyre and David May are both Wales U19 players and used their talents to the full.

The referee allowed the game to flow and gave some leeway to the inexperienced players who benefited from his explanations at key areas such as the play the ball. Player coach Dan Clements pronounced himself satisfied with this first effort whilst stressing the need for more training in the skills needed for Rugby League.
