| Tigers maul Miners to set up tie with Irish Swansea Valley Miners have a clash against Cardiff Demons in the Welsh Shield semi-finals, although they may be forced to withdraw from the final showdown due a heavy commitment of players to the Cwmtawe Sevens on August 7. Aberavon, who had the weekend off, found out their opponents as Torfaen hammered the Miners 60-12 at Ystalyfera on the final weekend of the regular season. And Swansea Valley player-coach Peter Gooding was already starting to look towards the 2005 campaign and improvement after the match. Gooding said: ''We are glad to be playing Cardiff (who beat Valley Cougars 48-30) as we have the beating of them if we have a full side. ''But this just shows the strength of the Welsh Conference in that Cardiff have got virtually the same squad as they had last year when they won the South West Conference but are down the bottom of the Welsh league. ''As Swansea Bulls we won one match last season but that was through default. This is, in all purposes, a new club and the only time we have been at our best was against Cardiff, when we beat them. ''We are just playing for next year and looking |
to get a better squad and a better side. We are looking to put a development plan together soon for next season.'' One of the Miners' problems during the season has been their tendency to only get into the game after the break. It was evident again on Saturday when Torfaen waltzed their way to a 30-0 half-time lead with five converted tries. They added another early in the second half before centre Christian Royts breached the visiting line and scored a touchdown which stand-off Gareth James converted. That spurred the Miners on, and just before the hour, prop Andrew Lustig caught a high kick to the corner and plunged over for the score which James again converted. It sparked memories of the amazing comeback from 38-13 down to a 38-38 draw earlier in the season on their home ground against Newport Titans. But there was to be none of that this time around as hooker Gareth Davies grabbed his try hat-trick for the Tigers and three more touchdowns put them well out of sight.
