Blue Bulls 42 Tigers 10
Bridgend win to keep Torfaen pointless
The Bridgend Blue Bulls traveled to Porthcawl RFC for this Total R.L Welsh Premiership match and defeated a depleted Tigers side by 42 points to 12 with wing John Doherty and scrum half Kevin Ellis each claiming two tries.

Defences ruled in the first 20 minutes with many big hits going in from both sides but a great break from John Doherty put loose forward Marcus Sainsbury over for the first try of the game and he was soon followed over the line by centre Geraint Lewis after a break from Paul Morgan. The Blue Bulls soon had a third thanks to a great run from Neil Dixon saw the fullback shrug off four Torfaen tacklers for a great solo try.

Jon Williams converted all three before helping to set up a score for Doherty and the first half was then finished off with veteran scrum half Kevin Ellis crossing over under the posts after a break from Lloyd O’Connor to give Bridgend a 28-0 half time lead.

The Tigers came out all guns blazing in the second half and were rewarded with two early tries, the first was made by a superb cross kick from Nolan Nicklin which fell into the hands of Dale Nash and a minute later they were over again after some poor Bulls tackling let in centre Luke Bigham, Scott Bessant added one conversion.

But the Bulls hit back and both Ellis and Doherty claimed their second tries before teenage replacement Lloyd O’Connor crossed for the Bulls eighth.

It was not the best performance of the season from the Bulls but they did more than enough to claim victory and were worthy winners. Neil Dixon was again outstanding and claimed his second Man of the Match award of the season while his fellow centre Geraint Lewis is getting better with every game and showed a great turn of speed to cross for his third try of the season.

Jon Williams kicked five goals to pass the 100 points mark this campaign and was involved in most of the Bulls tries while win John Doherty can be pleased with his brace of scores on his Blue Bulls debut.

Once again there were many big hits from the Bulls forwards with Jon Purnell, Lloyd Paget and Marcus Sainsbury excelling and Matthew Wareham had a brilliant game after missing the past three through injury. John Devereux rolled back the years and went on many charging runs while Kevin Ellis, who celebrated his 40th Birthday just a few days ago bossed the game well and was strong in both attack in defence.

The Bulls were also blessed with strong bench including Gareth Bartlett, Gareth Hopkins, Lloyd O’Connor and Hywel Davies and they all played their part in a fine game.

For the Tigers Robert Nash stood out on his first ever game of Rugby League while Luke Bigham, Damien Smith and Scott Bessant all had good games.

The Blue Bulls have next weekend off before traveling to Taff Wells on June 18th to take on the Cardiff Demons.
