Valley Cougars 14 Fighting Irish 66
Irish consolidate second place
Aberavon scored a crushing 66-14 victory at Sardis Road, Pontypridd, over a Valley Cougars team that have got their act together very well this season and were threatening to be the Fighting Irish's play-off opponents in a fortnight.

But, with the return of their players from the Students World Cup last Monday, the irish have an embarrasment of riches to choose from in their assault on the crown.

Powerhouse scrum-half Felton scored a sizzler of a try in the second half, charging over from 60 yards to take his team over the half-century mark.

The Glynneath product said: ''It was a good game. We are glad to have the boys back from the World Cup and we needed to get everyone together before the play-offs.

''It was top class playing with them again. Dean Scully was running the show again and Gareth Lewis had another good game.''

The Fighting Irish tackle Newport Titans in Gwent on Saturday as a final rehearsal before the play-off semi, the winners of which will tackle Bridgend at the Brewery Field in the Welsh Grand Final on August 14.

Felton added: ''It's a big game for us next week as we have to put the pressure on them and go for the win.''

Beating the unbeatable, though, is another matter, but the scrum-half added: ''If we play like we have been playing in the last couple of weeks, it's possible.

''We will give them a good game no matter what.''

Nobody else touched the ball between a restart and Felton going over between the posts as he caught it and dodged and weaved his way past numerous would-be tacklers.

''The try just happened so quickly,'' he added. ''It came to me and I saw a gap and then another gap. I put my head down and went for the line.''

Centre Scully grabbed two tries, as did loose forward Robert Hill and prop Lee Williams. Prop Andy Llewellyn also got a touchdown.

However, the star of the show for yet another weekend was stand-off Gareth Lewis who, not happy with scoring try after try in recent weekends, added another hat-trick to his total and kicked nine conversions.

With semi-professional contracts at the Celtic Crusaders up for grabs, Lewis has impressed Fighting Irish coach Chris O'Callaghan, who is chief executive of the team which will play in National League Two next summer.

O'Callaghan said of this match: ''The boys were superb. They were quite outstanding and, fair play to the Valley Cougars, they tried as hard as they could and scored a couple of decent tries.''

Swansea Valley Miners were without a match last weekend as it was their turn for a bye. They finish off their regular season next Saturday against Cardiff Demons
