UWIC 34 Glamorgan 6
UWIC v Glamorgan photo by Ian Lovell

UWIC of Cardiff clinched the National West and Wales title in convincing fashion with a 34-6 over local rivals Glamorgan.

Four tries without reply in the first half hour meant that there was no coming back for the men from the valleys. It was an error in the Glamorgan defence that let UWIC in for their first try in only the second minute. Matt Johns pounced on the loose ball for an easy touchdown. Johns got his and UWIC’s second in the 13th minute, Stu McReynolds off-loading to the winger for a try in the corner.

It was 16-0 on 19 minutes when James Thatcher scored under the sticks, and UWIC went in 22-0 up at half-time following Alex Ballard’s accurate bomb kick that led Gareth Jones to pounce on it and score. Ballard converted the try as he had done with the previous two.

Glamorgan finally got some points on the board in the 55th minute following Darren Jones’ try in the corner. Alex Coombs kicked the tricky conversion.

For the final two tries of the game, Glamorgan found their past coming back to haunt them. Wales Student International, Denis Pugh, who was Glamorgan University’s Sportsman of the Year in 2004/2005 is now doing further studies at UWIC. In the 65th minute, he created a try for Ballard before scoring one himself in the 70th.

UWIC can now look forward to the draw for the BUSA Premiership play-offs whilst Glamorgan now need to win their final two matches to clinch second place behind their big city rivals.
