In the opening match of the tournament, England had a tense struggle against traditional foe Scotland before ending victors at 30-10. The strains of the national anthems were still drifting on the Manchester air when England second row Danny Wilson scored the first try of the competition in the left corner. Further tries from Nick Walker and Steve Hall and a single conversion from Ian Gordon put England 14-0 ahead at half time. Lightowler awarded England a penalty and within seconds centre Dave Llewellyn turned the match around by squeezing in at the left corner. Despite the efforts of man of the match James Morrow, England were dominant from that point onwards. It wasn’t long before first Kevin Till and then substitute Stewart Sanderson scored and two more conversions for Gordon took England to a 30-4 match winning lead.
