Wales 37 Ireland 28

As the first match ended, Wales and Ireland took to the field in a classic exhibition of ‘a game of two halves.’

Leading 24-0 at half time, Wales thought they were sitting comfortably. Dominating power play from the Welsh forwards created tries for backs James Thatcher, Matt Jackson, Richard Lewis and Alex Ballard which were all converted by full back Jackson. A try by Chris Vitalini early in the second half extended the lead to 30-0.

Then Ireland scored four spectacular tries during which Wales only touched the ball

when restarting play. Ireland scorers were Niall Goodyear, Steve Owen, Bernard Westman and Mike Fairclough all from long distance. Three conversions by Westman made the score 30-22.

Wales again kicked off and to their great relief Ireland knocked on. From the scrum, Lewis got his second try and the final conversion from man of the match Matt Jackson opened the margin to 36-22 before a drop goal from Pete Moore made it 37-22. Nevertheless Ireland attacked once more and Owen scored a second to give a result of 37-28.
