England 44 Wales 18

Thus we proceeded to the final game of the championship between England and Wales which would decide the eventual winners.

The opening score went to Wales centre Chris Vitalini but a rapid fire response from England saw them post four tries to Kevin Till, John Turner, Matt Mulholland and Gary Peacham. One conversion each by McKinley and Stuart Sanderson gave a commanding lead of 20-4. Just before the break Rhys Griffiths went under the posts and Jackson’s conversion kept Wales in the running as the half ended 20-10 in England’s favour.

In the final forty minutes however the England forwards took complete control giving their backs the opportunity to stretch the Welsh defence. As a result, tries came at regular intervals to Chris Todd (2), man of the match hooker Stewart Sanderson and Nick Walker as England doubled their points tally. Eventually with the score at 40-10, James Thatcher and Lloyd O’Connor scored for Wales and Jackson kicked his first goal of the day. The competition was brought to a close however as the ‘Volcano’ John Turner got his second of the afternoon to put him top of the individual try scoring table with four.
